ClassNK Grants Approval in Principle (AiP) for GSC Developed Ammonia Ready LNG Fueled Panamax Bulk Carrier

Leading classification society ClassNK has granted Approval in Principle (AiP) for the design of an ammonia-capable, LNG-fueled Panamax bulk carrier developed by the Green Ship Planning and Design Center (GSC).

Ammonia is to be used as a marine fuel for decarbonization because it does not emit any CO2 when burned. Meanwhile, taking proper security measures is impartial because it is toxic to humans and corrosive to materials, and ClassNK has been working to develop standards and certifications.

In 2021, ClassNK published its “Guidelines for Vessels Using Alternative Fuels” to minimize the risks associated with ammonia-fuelled vessels to vessels, crew and the environment by specifying installation, control and safety device requirements. ClassNK subsequently granted Approval in Principle (AiP) to design an ammonia fueled Panamax bulk carrier, developed by GSC in January 2022.

GSC describes the newly developed design as LNG powered but ready for ammonia fuel. It is operated with LNG fuel for the lower CO2 emissions that are aimed for in the short term. There are two scenarios for the long-term pursuit of zero carbon emissions; In the first scenario it will switch to propulsion systems powered by ammonia, in the second scenario it will keep the systems but switch its fuel from LNG to liquefied CO2-neutral methane. The ship was designed as a flexible and efficient solution to survive the unpredictable period of fuel transition.

ClassNK verified the design for compliance as an LNG fueled vessel based on its Rules Part GF, which contains the IGF Code, and as an ammonia capable vessel based on the concept design category of its “Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels”, Appendix 1 With their requirements to verify an LNG-fuelled vessel and a future ammonia-fuelled vessel, ClassNK has issued an Approval in Principle (AiP) as an Ammonia Capable LNG-fuelled vessel.

ClassNK will continue to engage in innovative initiatives related to decarbonization. By incorporating the expertise from working with pioneers into its rules and policies, ClassNK will support the decarbonization of the entire industry.
