Feel-good moments in football cost money, and people feel really good about razorback football in particular.
It is well documented that when he was hired, Sam Pittman was so overwhelmed by the idea that Arkansas track and field director Hunter Yurachek was ready to make him the new head coach that he forgot that money should be a talking point too.
It will now be the topic of conversation. Pittman just hired a super agent for college football coach Jimmy Sexton. Arkansas fans will remember him from the many raise he received Houston Nutt from spreading rumors about schools trying to hire Nutt on a daily basis.
When the $ 3 million deal first landed on Pittman’s desk, the new boss, Hog, was pleased. He had nearly quadrupled his earnings in Georgia while agreeing to a budget-friendly deal that allowed him to go out and hire top assistants.
But that was two years ago.
The inflation caused by the inability to find enough labor in the retail shipping industry is nothing compared to the inflation caused by the bus shipping industry. Every time a trainer is fired, an agent yells.
Hard numbers have been released as of this writing, but most expect Lincoln Riley’s contract to be just over Nick Saban’s $ 9.7 million a year, meaning he has a real chance of making the first 10- Become a million dollar college football man.
LSU’s Brian Kelly will check in around $ 9.5 million, half a million more per year than Orgeron despite the 2019 national title.
Lane Kiffen, who entered the league at the same time as Pittman, has just signed a $ 7.5 million extension.
Former Louisiana coach Billy Napier, who has not coached a single second in the SEC, has just signed a seven-year contract valued at $ 7.4 million per season.
Even SMU’s Sonny Dykes was offered at least $ 4 million not to flee for TCU. Discussions on local Dallas radio suggest that SMU could have raised the money up to $ 6 million if there had been a chance to keep it.
Yurachek would have to offer Pittman at least a 33% raise just to get him on the minimum offer of a 5-year school. Simple pride in being an SEC school should lead Arkansas to offer an extension that goes well beyond Pittman’s current contract.
An Elite 8 on Eric Musselman’s Razorback basketball team earned him a raise to $ 4 million, making Arkansas one of the few universities where the basketball coach makes more money than the soccer coach.
But that won’t take long.
While private schools upset the rankings a bit by not having to disclose salaries, Pittman’s contract is best estimates just outside the top 50. If a top 25 coach wants to make money in the top 25, his contract must be at least $ 5 million.
Yurachek may have to poke around his bevy of cheerful checkbooks a little carefully to get the amount Pittman deserves.
If he failed, all he had to do was bring up games against Western Kentucky, North Texas, Colorado State, and San Jose State. A gentle reminder of where this thing was just two years ago should be more than enough to get the money flowing.
