RWE and Tata Power are developing offshore wind projects in India

Germany-based energy company RWE has partnered with Indian utility Tata Power to explore the potential for joint development of offshore wind projects in India.

Tata Power subsidiary Tata Power Renewable Energy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with RWE Renewables, RWE’s renewable energy business.

The collaboration comes after the Indian government set a target to install 30GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 to meet the country’s growing energy needs.

dr Praveer Sinha, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Power, said: “RWE is our ideal partner to support Tata Power’s plans to grow and expand the offshore wind business based on its global expertise in offshore execution and operations -wind projects.

“The collaboration becomes even more relevant as the Indian government increases its focus on offshore wind farms to meet the country’s growing electricity needs.”

The partnership between the two companies is intended to help build a competitive offshore wind market in India, which has a total coastline of around 7,600 km.

The Indian government is conducting detailed technical studies and creating a regulatory framework to organize auctions for offshore wind farms off the coasts of Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.

Sven Utermöhlen, CEO of RWE Renewables Wind Offshore, said: “India has excellent wind resources that can help meet the country’s increasing energy needs.

“In Tata Power we have an excellent and experienced partner at our side, with deep local roots and sharing our ambition to drive offshore wind growth in India.

“Combined with RWE’s 20-year track record of developing, constructing and operating offshore wind projects, we are well positioned to provide green offshore wind energy to Indian society as competitively as possible.”

Earlier this month, RWE partnered with British oil and gas company Neptune Energy to develop H2opZee, an offshore green hydrogen demonstration project in the Dutch North Sea.
