Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s new Roro ship Nabucco called In

Wallenius Wilhelmsen recently celebrated the christening of the RoRo ship MV Nabucco in the port of Gothenburg.

The ceremony was broadcast live from Gothenburg, which only a select group attended due to the recent increase in Covid cases. MV Nabucco is the last in a series of four HERO-class sister ships, said Wallenius Wilhelmsen.

To highlight the ship’s sustainable features and the company’s ambitious sustainability agenda, a bottle-shaped ice sculpture was struck against the hull, the company added.

The godparents, the sustainable battery company and Wallenius Wilhemsen customer, Northvolt, handed over a battery to Captain Fredrik Krysén, which he should keep on board as a reminder that both companies are committed to a decarbonised world.

Torbjørn Wist, Acting CEO of Wallenius Wilhelmsen, said in his speech: “This ship is a leader in terms of minimizing CO2 emissions, ship recycling and fuel efficiency. It is our last ship to be based on conventional fuel technology and we are now looking at the next generation of energy solutions. “Photo credit: Wallenius Wilhelmsen

“Nabucco and her sister ships are among the most sustainable RoRo ships in the global fleet. The HERO-class reduces energy consumption by drastically improving the freight-to-ballast ratio. Since the larger width (36.5 m) offers better stability, there is less need for ballast water, “said Wallenius Wilhelmsen.

In addition, adds Wallenius Wilhelmsen, an optimized hull reduces drag and wave resistance and improves fuel efficiency, while the engine has been tuned for low-load operation to reduce fuel consumption.

The cargo hold of the Nabucco was equipped with electrically elevating deck panels, which enable fast, safe and flexible operation to allow for variations in the cargo mix and to transport large and heavy (oversized) cargo.

The ship was supplied by Tianjin Xingang Shipbuilding. Nabucco is now on its way to Zeebrugge for loading and will sail to the USA, Asia and back to Europe.
